Withered Meaness - Food banks are not welfare
Posted on
Nothing best illustrates the mindset of the current Conservative portion of the Coalition than the recent remarks made by Lord Freud, Welfare Minister, at Question Time in the House of Lords recently when asked about the spiralling use of food banks and welfare the Minister was adamant that: “Food banks are absolutely not part of our welfare system……”
When ask to clarify his remarks that there was: “No evidence as to whether the use of food banks is supply led or demand led” he said: “Food from a food bank – the supply – is a free good and by definition, there is an almost infinite demand for a free good”.
So roughly translated this version of free market economics means that because its free, the numbers of people needing it – the demand – are irrelevant, they are just hungry.
