Roger signs petition to Theresa May protesting unfair spouse visa rules
Posted on
Roger has added his name to a 38degrees.org petition written by a young British woman who will be forced to give birth without her Japanese husband, due to the Coalition’s decision that spouse visas will only be granted to couples who fill a restrictive and unnecessarily stringent set of criteria.
Under the Government’s new family migration policy British citizens or people with refugee status can only sponsor a visa so that they can live in the UK with their spouse if they fulfil a list of financial conditions. These include earning at least £18,600 per year (more than many nurses and soldiers).
Roger says: “These overly-restrictive conditions will prevent perfectly solvent British citizens and their spouses from living together in their own country. The Government should listen to the High Court, which ruled that these changes are ‘an unjustified and disproportionate interference with a genuine spousal relationship.’ It is deeply unfair to prevent couples who love each other and are financially self-sufficient from being together.”
