East Coast rail service renationalised for the third time

Speaking from Westminster on 16 May, after the Department for Transport announced that it had had to once again return to public hands essential transport infrastructure which had been run extremely poorly by for-profit companies, Roger commented: “Yet again private train companies—in this case Stagecoach and Virgin—have handed the East Coast rail service back to the Government because they could not make the profit they expected.
“The Government have allowed Stagecoach and Virgin to terminate the franchise three years early in 2020, which means that the operators avoid payments of £2bn to the Government. So, once again, the taxpayer has bailed out private operators. What a shambles!”
